Black tea is the most popular type of tea, even more popular than green tea. Nearly three-quarters of the tea consumed worldwide is black tea.

Unlike green tea, black tea leaves are fully oxidized, giving them a dark color and a more intense flavor, often with notes of caramel, dried fruit, or spices.

The antioxidants and other compounds found in black tea may offer health benefits similar to those associated with green tea, such as helping reduce inflammation in the body, supporting heart health, and contributing to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Black tea has a fascinating history, closely intertwined with trade, culture, and tradition. Unlike green tea, which has been consumed in China for thousands of years, black tea emerged later and quickly became a favorite among European traders due to its longer shelf life.

Legend has it that black tea was discovered in China during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), when tea leaves were allowed to oxidize for longer than those used to produce green tea, resulting in a more intense flavor and darker color.

Black tea subsequently became one of China’s most important export products, being traded along the famous Tea Horse Road to Europe and the Middle East.

In the 19th century, the British sought alternatives to Chinese tea and began cultivating tea in India, particularly in the Assam and Darjeeling regions. British plantations led to the development of renowned black tea varieties such as Assam and Darjeeling, each with its own distinctive aromatic profile.

Today, black tea is enjoyed around the world and comes in countless varieties, from Earl Grey, flavored with bergamot, to Indian and Chinese teas with rich and complex flavor profiles.
