The 33 farmers of the Okoluu Farmers Group grow coffee at breathtaking elevations ranging from 2,000 to 2,150 meters above sea level. The coffee trees on farms of approximately 2 hectares are between 1 and 7 years old. Farmers are increasingly adopting disease-resistant, higher-yielding varieties that help improve and develop their agricultural practices. The farms contributing to this lot are certified organic.
Cultivation
Farming methods in Guji remain largely traditional. Farmers in Guji typically grow coffee alongside other food crops. This approach is common among smallholder producers because it maximizes the use of available land while providing food for their families.
Farmers selectively hand-pick the coffee cherries. Ripe cherries are placed on raised beds to dry in the sun. Throughout the drying process, the cherries are turned frequently to ensure even drying. The drying process takes approximately 2–3 weeks.
Coffee from Guji
Coffee from Guji has only recently been differentiated from coffee produced in the neighboring regions of Sidamo and Yirgacheffe. However, thanks to its exceptional quality and distinctive flavor profiles, Guji coffee is rapidly gaining international recognition.
The Guji region benefits from abundant rainfall and is characterized by steep, mountainous terrain—conditions that are ideal for supporting the impressive diversity of coffee cultivated here.
