Honduras is a country that fascinates with its natural beauty—mountainous regions covered in endless forests and jungles teeming with wildlife. It’s a land many call “the green lungs of Central America.”
Lempira is a versatile and intriguing coffee variety, boasting several unique characteristics. Developed by the Instituto Hondureño del Café (IHCAFE), it has a high yield potential, which is significant for coffee growers in Honduras, as coffee is a vital economic driver for the country.
Lempira thrives best at higher altitudes, between 1,200 and 1,800 meters above sea level. The variety shows good adaptability to warm climates and acidic soils. However, it’s important to note that recent findings indicate Lempira is susceptible to coffee leaf rust and Ojo de Gallo.
Despite these challenges, Lempira coffee offers an appealing aromatic profile, with a balanced blend of flavors including notes of chocolate and citrus. As such, Lempira remains a valued variety, appreciated for its unique flavor and its contribution to Honduras’s coffee production.
