The Kiandu Washing Station, established in the 1970s, is an essential hub for smallholder coffee farmers in the Kirinyaga region of Kenya. As part of the Mutheka Cooperative Society, one of the most active cooperative organizations in the area, Kiandu has played an important role in the community’s efforts to improve coffee quality and promote fair and responsible processing practices.

Through its infrastructure, the station has provided farmers with access to essential resources, technical support, and a shared platform for development, helping strengthen the local coffee-growing community.

Located south of the Aberdare Forest, an area renowned for its rich biodiversity, the station benefits from a temperate climate, with average temperatures of approximately 24°C during the day and 12°C at night. Nutrient-rich volcanic loam soil, combined with annual rainfall of approximately 1,500–1,600 mm, creates ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.

Shade trees such as macadamia and grevillea help protect the coffee plants from excessive sunlight while contributing to soil health and supporting a balanced agricultural ecosystem.

Most of the coffee produced at Kiandu comes from the renowned SL-28 and SL-34 varieties, both celebrated for their intense and complex aromatic profiles. Smaller quantities of Baitan and Ruiru 11 are also cultivated.

Farmers also grow other crops, including tea, maize, and beans. This agricultural diversification helps maintain soil fertility while providing additional sources of income, contributing to the long-term economic sustainability of the farming community.

The station serves approximately 750 farmers, each managing an average of 0.1 hectares of land. Most cooperative members belong to the Kikuyu community, which has a deep agricultural tradition and rich cultural heritage. Kikuyu language and traditions are naturally integrated into the cooperative’s daily activities, fostering a strong sense of solidarity and shared purpose.

The harvest season at Kiandu takes place between October and December, a period characterized by intensive collaboration and meticulous work. Farmers hand-pick the coffee cherries, selecting only those that have reached optimal ripeness before delivering them for processing.

The coffee is processed using the washed method, a standard approach in Kenya that emphasizes clarity, cleanliness, and precision in the cup.

In the cup, this Kiandu lot offers a sweet and vibrant profile, combining bright citrus acidity with a creamy body. Notes of rhubarb and molasses are complemented by delicate fruity nuances of peach and blueberry, creating a balanced and expressive Kenyan coffee with excellent clarity and sweetness.
