Kiamaina is a washing station located on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, in the municipality of Karatina, Nyeri County. Established in 1974, it is one of four washing stations (or “factories,” as they are known in Kenya) owned by the Kiama Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS).
Kiamaina is surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Nyeri.
The station receives coffee cherries from 461 smallholder farmers who are members of the Kiama cooperative. These farmers cultivate small plots nearby, situated at an average altitude of 1,750–1,850 meters above sea level. The region is defined by its bright red volcanic soil, rich in nutrients, and the cool climate—both of which contribute to the exceptional quality of the coffee produced here.
Kiamaina is led by Purity Wanjiku Muriuki—the first woman to manage a factory within Kiama FCS—who supervises the meticulous handling, collection and processing of coffee cherries. She manages a team of five permanent staff members year-round, along with six additional workers during the harvest season.
