Coffee was introduced to Mexico at the end of the 1700s. Today, it is cultivated in 16 states, although most of the production is concentrated in the southern part of the country. The regions of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz are the most important producing areas, where a diverse range of premium coffees is grown. These vary from light-bodied varieties with delicate aromas to sweeter coffees with notes of caramel or chocolate. These unique flavors are influenced by numerous microclimates, characterized by diverse rainfall patterns and rich soils.
In addition to its aromatic diversity, Mexico is among the world's largest exporters of organic coffee, highlighting producers' commitment to sustainable cultivation methods.
Chiapas is Mexico's leading coffee-producing region, contributing 40% of the country's total production. Here, coffee is grown at altitudes ranging from 1,300 to 1,700 meters, benefiting from varied elevations, microclimates, and rich volcanic soils. The aromatic profile is well-balanced, with notes of chocolate, caramel, and citrus.
Las Hortensias showcases the potential of organic coffee in Mexico. This washed-process selection comes from Motozintla, the capital of the Sierra Mariscal region in Chiapas, located right on the border with Guatemala. In addition to its organic certification, Las Hortensias meets SHG EP standards. SHG ("Strictly High Grown") indicates that this coffee was grown at altitudes above 1,200 meters, while EP ("European Preparation") guarantees a rigorous selection of beans for a high-quality product.
