Nestled in the serene landscapes of El Suyatal, Macuelizo, Nueva Segovia, you will find Finca Bethania, a peaceful haven of coffee cultivation and friendship. This idyllic farm takes its name from the Catholic faith, symbolizing the place where Jesus found peace and visited his dear friends Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. The name Bethania embodies tranquility, friendship, and hospitality – qualities that resonate throughout the farm’s lush grounds.
Martha Lucía Albir Sotomayor, the visionary behind Finca Bethania, has nurtured this piece of paradise since 1991. Over the years, the farm has grown to cover a generous 27.25 hectares, providing livelihoods and employment for many. The farm employs one permanent worker and welcomes an additional 70 workers during the harvest season, making a significant contribution to the local economy.

The coffee grown on this plot is cultivated under the shade of forest and fruit trees, demonstrating a deep commitment to sustainable agriculture. Low-intensity pesticides, organic and synthetic fertilizers are used to support the health of the farm, while pruning and shade-management practices help maintain crop quality.
Once the coffee cherries have reached optimal ripeness, they are carefully hand-picked, floated, and sorted. Following a carefully controlled fermentation process lasting 24 to 36 hours, the coffee is transferred to a dry mill, where it is placed on African drying beds. The coffee never comes into contact with the ground and is regularly turned with PVC rakes to ensure even drying.
Once the coffee reaches the optimal moisture level of 11–11.5%, it is stored in a specially designated area of the warehouse, strictly separated from other coffees. The coffee is stored in new plastic and jute bags, ensuring its integrity and quality until it is ready for export.
After resting for one month, the coffee is hulled and sorted according to the client’s specifications, then packed in jute and Ecotact bags bearing the corresponding ICO code. Despite the challenges posed by climate change and rising production costs, Finca Bethania remains committed to producing premium coffee and contributing to the local community. The farm supports various social and educational initiatives, including providing school supplies to local primary schools.
Payment to farmers is based on bean quality, ensuring fair compensation for the hard work invested in each harvest. Looking ahead, investment and development plans include improving the wet-processing system and implementing coffee pre-drying tunnels.
The farm is primarily focused on coffee cultivation, and its passion for producing the finest coffee is unmistakable. Despite the challenges posed by nature and the economy, Finca Bethania remains unwavering in its commitment to producing some of the finest coffees while fostering a community built on friendship and peace.
