Humure Washing Station

Humure is a remarkable washing station in Rwanda, managed exclusively by women. This year, our local partner, Baho Coffee, invested in new washing channels and a large storage facility to improve the production and handling of high-quality coffee.

The station takes its name from the highest hill in the area, a popular tourist destination and an important gathering place for members of the local community. As Rusatira Emmanuel, Managing Director of Baho Coffee, puts it: “It is like a flag for the area.”

Rwandan coffee farmers typically own small plots, usually with around 250 coffee trees, often intercropped with food crops such as maize and potatoes. Despite the small size of their farms, coffee remains the main cash crop for many families and their most important source of income throughout the year.

Washing stations across Rwanda, including those operated by Baho Coffee, work to encourage the production of high-quality coffee by offering better prices and support to farmers who are committed to improving the quality of their harvests.

Humure supports local farmers in several ways. The station provides protective equipment, including masks and gloves, for the safe application of certain agricultural chemicals.

Farmers can also access small one-year loans to cover production costs and essential expenses such as medical bills or school fees.

The station maintains its own coffee nurseries, distributing seedlings to farmers to help them renovate and rejuvenate aging coffee plantations. Humure also provides training in hygiene and sanitation and helps farmers gain access to clean water.

Through these initiatives, Humure Washing Station goes beyond coffee processing, supporting both coffee quality and the long-term well-being of the farming communities that make this exceptional coffee possible.
