The Rwenzori region in western Uganda is a place where coffee naturally comes to life. Here, at altitudes between 1,600 and 2,200 meters above sea level, young volcanic soils and a cool climate force the cherries to mature slowly, allowing them to develop sugars and a bright acidity characteristic of high-altitude Arabica.
Farmers in Rwenzori work on small plots where each cherry is hand-picked only at the optimal stage of ripeness. The rhythm of rainfall, significant temperature differences between day and night, and constant humidity create an environment where coffee develops depth, clarity, and a natural sweetness that is difficult to find in other East African regions.
Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where coffee is part of the natural landscape. Robusta has grown wild here for centuries, in the forests surrounding Lake Victoria, and this natural origin has transformed Uganda into a global reference for quality Robusta. Over time, Arabica was introduced to the mountainous regions of the east and west, where high altitudes and volcanic soils created excellent conditions for clean, bright, and aromatic coffees.
Over the past decades, Uganda has transitioned from a production model focused mainly on volume to a stronger culture of quality. Investments in processing, farmer education, and the development of micro-lots have elevated the country’s position in the specialty coffee market. Today, Uganda is recognized both for Robusta with rich structure and excellent consistency, as well as high-altitude Arabica with fruity notes and surprising clarity.
