Located in the heart of the sub-Saharan region of the African continent, Zimbabwe lies within the ideal latitudes for coffee cultivation (20°N – 30°S). Because of this, the country has had a long but complicated history with coffee, ever since the plant was introduced in the mid-1800s.
Although Zimbabwe is considered more of a tea-drinking nation due to its British cultural influence, many Zimbabweans still enjoy coffee—whether as a morning beverage or simply as a flavorful drink to savor anytime.
In Zimbabwe, Arabica coffee beans are cultivated. The country offers some of the best climates in the world for coffee agriculture, with warm temperatures year-round. In the eastern and northern parts of the country, high-altitude terrain provides a more balanced temperature environment along with humidity. In the final months of the year, Zimbabwe also enjoys abundant rainfall. All these factors contribute to the growth and productivity of the coffee plant.
One of the most renowned coffee-growing regions is Manicaland, in the eastern part of the country. This region includes the towns of Chipinge, Chimanimani, Mutasa, and Mutare, which are especially famous for the coffee grown there—known for its sweet, fruity taste and strong aroma. The aftertaste leaves a wine-like acidity on the palate. Coffee cultivated here is considered gourmet coffee in Zimbabwe.
Farfell is one of the most fascinating coffee estates. This small plantation operates as a family business and produces premium-quality coffee, handpicked, washed, and sun-dried. In the southeastern tip of Zimbabwe, near the border with Mozambique, at nineteen degrees south of the Equator and 1,200 meters above sea level, lies Mount Selinda—home to the indigenous Chirinda Forest, known for its ancient red mahogany trees.
Farfell Coffee Estate is planted with approximately 170 hectares of high-altitude Arabica coffee trees and is located adjacent to the forest. Facing the Indian Ocean and benefiting from its own microclimate, the estate features deep, fine dolerite soils, ideal for producing high-quality coffee. With a single annual harvest and a very limited production of Arabica coffee grown for true connoisseurs, Farfell is a market leader in specialty coffee.
