About the Region
Caicara del Orinoco is one of the most remote and untouched cocoa-growing regions in Venezuela. Located deep within Bolívar State, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest near the banks of the Orinoco River, the region is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, nutrient-rich soils, and humid tropical climate. These unique conditions create a terroir that is virtually impossible to replicate elsewhere.
Reaching Caicara del Orinoco is a challenge in itself. The journey takes more than 13 hours and involves crossing around 14 bridges, many of which are frequently in poor condition. This isolation has helped preserve the region's traditional cocoa cultivation practices while making its cocoa one of the rarest and most sought-after origins in the world.
The cocoa beans are cultivated and harvested by the indigenous Piaroa community, often referred to as the "Guardians of the Forest." Around 60 families live and work in this remote area, where cocoa trees grow naturally within the Amazon rainforest without chemical inputs or intensive agricultural practices.
The beans belong to the "Forasteros del Alto Amazonas" genetic group, a rare and largely untouched lineage regarded as part of the region's natural heritage. Although officially classified as Amazonian Forastero, these beans display an unusually refined sensory profile that closely resembles Criollo cocoa, offering pronounced floral complexity and exceptionally low astringency.
Post-harvest processing follows traditional local methods. The beans are fermented for 6 to 8 days in wooden boxes covered with leaves, allowing their natural flavors to develop fully. They are then slowly sun-dried under carefully controlled conditions to preserve their integrity and aromatic complexity. The fermentation rate consistently exceeds 92%, reflecting the exceptional quality and precision of the processing.
